| How Does the Wound of War- Any War- Inflict the Human Heart? Cape May Stage Presents We Are All Brothers: Anti-War Poetry Through the Ages Performed by Michael Fischetti |
|
| Performance: October 19, 2009- 8 p.m. Cape May, NJOctober 5, 2009- New York actor, teacher, and producer, Michael Fischetti will be at Cape May Stage on Monday evening, October 19 at 8 p.m. reading a collection of poetry about the human condition in a time of war called We Are All Brothers: Anti-War Poetry Through the Ages. As we debate our nation's involvement in Afghanistan, Mr. Fischetti will repeat his New York triumph with poems from Homer to Owen to our most contemporary voices in the Equity theatre’s Second Stage Series. Performing a selection of timeless pieces that Fischetti selected, this performance is sure to challenge certain beliefs, raise questions, and inspire future discussions. Hailed as a “powerful manifesto with superbly chosen poems” by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Phillip Levine, Fischetti includes the sublime poetry of ancient Greece, Rome, and China, from the dead poets of the numbered wars on both sides of the front, to our own contemporaries. This selection of anti-war poetry stems from a vast range of international literature and can be found in every country and in every age. Because poets are compelled to write about what concerns the people, Fischetti’s dramatic presentation not only shows that war is the cause of pain, suffering, and injustice, but also brings to life the human existence in connection with war. In addition to this popular spoken word performance, Fischetti studied acting at the Moscow Art Theatre and the Actor’s Studio. He has since enjoyed a noteworthy acting career in New York and in regional theatres throughout the United States and Canada. On Broadway, he understudied Judd Hirsch in Lanford Wilson’s Pulitzer winner Talley’s Folly. Off-Broadway, his credits include Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, Eugene O’Neill’s Hughie, Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge, and David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross to name a few. Film credits include Prizzi’s Honor with Jack Nicholson, Frank Gilroy’s The Gig, F/X, Internal Affairs, Sea of Love with Al Pacino, and Love Affair with Warren Beatty. Fischetti taught acting classes at the Folkine Ballet Company, was Co-Artistic Director of the South Street Theatre, and is a founding member of the 42nd Street Theater Row. After a successful summer of world-class entertainment, Cape May Stage’s Second Stage Series continues to fill the theatre during traditionally ‘dark nights’ with additional programming for patrons. Presenting high-caliber talent, such as Fischetti’s unique poetry collection, resonates with Artistic Director Roy Steinberg’s vision of giving theatergoers widely diverse entertainment all season long. Ticket Information We Are All Brothers: Anti-War Poetry Through the Ages performs Monday, October 19 at 8 p.m. at The Robert Shackleton Playhouse of the Cape May Stage. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved by calling (609) 884-1341. This performance contains adult language. Audio enhancement, wheelchair accessible seating, and large print programs are available with advance notice by calling the box office at (609) 884-1341. | East Lynne Theater Company Celebrates 30 Years! | |
| What a year this has been for ELTC, beginning in January when it was voted One of the Top Two Equity Professional Theaters in the State in The Discover Jersey Arts' "People's Choice Awards." In August, The 400th Anniversary Committee presented ELTC with a plaque acknowledging ELTC's work to help celebrate Cape May's founding. On October 26, at The New Jersey Theatre Alliance's Applause Awards, ELTC will receive a "Certificate of Achievement Award" for bringing American Classics to life and educating young and old about American plays, literature and history, throughout the state. On Thursday, November 12, East Lynne Theater Company, itself, celebrates thirty years of entertaining audiences in Cape May and throughout the country, and everyone is invited to the big birthday bash: "The Ultimate Theater Party." The location is Aleathea's Restaurant at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean Street, and the restaurant, once again, is graciously supporting the event. Warren Kliewer founded ELTC hoping "it could become a vehicle for rediscovering the enduring values of the American heritage and for deepening our understanding of what it means to be an American." The current Artistic Director, Gayle Stahlhuth, Technical Director, Lee O'Connor, Frank Smith, President of the Board, and Michele LaRue, the wife of ELTC's founder, have considered it a privilege to be part of this unique organization, and all four will be present to join the celebration. The evening begins at 5:30p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. At 6:30, a sumptuous surf and turf dinner is served along with entertainment! This year, Special Guest Celebrities perform with ELTC Equity professionals in scenes from some of ELTC's most popular plays from the last ten years. Celebrities include Michael Clark, Vicki Clark, Bernie Haas, Ed Henry, Teresa Henry, Dave Kurkowski, Jim Moffatt, Candace O'Donnell, Sally Sachs, Shirley Stiles, Terri Swain, and Susan Tischler. They are joined with ELTC favorites Patti Chambers, Karen Case Cook, Suzanne Dawson, Mark Edward Lang, Marty McDonough, Alison J. Murphy, and Fred Velde. Some of the scenes selected, which will be familiar to many ELTC patrons, are from "Spoon River Anthology," "Rain," "Why Marry?," "The Dictator," and "Anna Christie." There will also be a costume exhibit from ELTC's collection and hands-on sound effects used in ELTC's popular radio shows. Chris Sooy supplies the live piano music, and Phil Pizzi, camera in hand, will greet people and document the Party. The result: DVDs that may be purchased for only $10! The recipient of the Historic Jackson Street Neighborhood Association Scholarship Fund in the Name of Bob and Toni Green will also be announced. ELTC is selling 50/50 Raffle Tickets for $50 each, with the opportunity to win $3,000, $1,500, or $500, and purchasers don't have to be present to win. Only 200 tickets will be sold and The Kiwanis Club of Cape May is graciously co-hosting this event and supporting the raffle. Checks should be made out to Kiwanis Club of Cape May Foundation and mailed to ELTC’s office, 121 Fourth Ave., West Cape May, NJ 08204. The only auction item this year will be the popular "A Day in Manhattan with Gayle and Lee." To attend the Party only costs $50, and checks should be made out to East Lynne Theater Company and mailed to the office. Reservations must be made by November 2. For information and reservations, please call ELTC at 884-5898. Plans for the upcoming 2010 Season are shaping up, and will be revealed on this night. In the works are a world premiere about Emma Goldman, "Berkeley Square," about an American time-traveler traversing between 1784 and 1928 London, and the return of ELTC's 2001 comedy hit, "The Dictator." Season tickets will be available. All of the proceeds for the evening go to the Equity professional nonprofit East Lynne Theater Company to support the production season and educational outreach. Meanwhile, George S. Kaufman's comedy "The Butter and Egg Man," is playing through October 24 only! For information and reservations, contact ELTC at 884-5898, or (click here). |
