Edition 6, Volume 1
September 15, 2006
Today's Date:
Welcome to our Newsletter...

We know it’s hard to believe because there’s so much going on, but September is half over, and the Great Vacation newsletter just keeps on finding new things to see and do. Our town calendars are filled with events for the remainder of this month and right on into October. We have new attractions and features, as usual, plus all those places to stay and dine.

In this issue we check out the Classic Car show in Wildwood, and we also look at our next boardwalk “…down the shore” as we continue on down the coast of southern New Jersey in search of places you’ve never been and things you have yet to sample.

In our last issue we moved inland in our Artist’s Corner, and in this issue we return to Millville, New Jersey again to meet someone in the art community who is not only the matriarch of the art world in that city, but, to the minds of many, the one person who made the dream come true through years of hard work, and her vision of what could be.

The beginning of autumn arrives with this issue, and the fall is a great time to visit so many wonderful places throughout the southern New Jersey region when the days get cooler and the nights are great for sleeping.  There are festivals and shows, arts and crafts, entertainment and concerts and much more to see and do.

September beach time is still fun time, with the days warm enough to enjoy the sun and sand. The ocean water is usually comfortable enough to enjoy a dip in the world’s “biggest saltwater pool,” and a liberal use of sunscreen is always recommended at all times during the year.

You’ll find the entertainment line-up for Atlantic City’s casinos and arenas, taking note, of the appearances of Elton John and The Rolling Stones (October 7th and October 27th respectively, at Boardwalk Hall arena),  and you’ll be thinking of fall weekend getaways and day trips throughout the southern region.

As usual, we thank you for your interest. Tell your friends about Great Vacation newsletter, or simply email it to them. Share your comments with us – both good and not-so-good. We need to have input to help has be sure we’re helping you. Suggestions?

Give us your feedback. Check out our blog, too. Autumn at the shore is filled with lots of fun things to see and do. Have a great time!

                                                           Sincerely,

The Artist’s Corner

The Millville Art Renaissance and Pat Witt

Don’t be fooled by her age. One look in the eyes of Pat Witt and you’ll see a spirit as young as her art, and as beautiful as the scenes she paints. Listen to her students, and discover her incredible knowledge of her medium, and you’ll know why that at the age of 80, Pat Witt so delights in art and the people who create it.

She was born in the town she loves, Millville, New Jersey, and began her study of art in 1937, attending the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Glassboro State College. For more than 40 years her one-woman shows and group appearances have been seen at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia Art Alliance, Noyes Museum, Brian Parent Center, and with the American Painters in Paris Bicentennial in 1976 in Paris.

Her work is seen in public and private collections locally, as well as throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. She is known as a “wetlands painter,” and her love for these landscapes comes to life through her preferred mediums of gouache aquarelle and oils.

In 1962 Pat Witt founded the Barn Studio of Art at 814 Whitaker Avenue in Millville, New Jersey, and since then she has taught and inspired thousands of children and adults and watched them all develop their own talents and grow in their love for the beauty of the world around them and their ability to express it in their work. The success of so many is a tribute to her patient instruction and guidance.

Pat Witt’s Barn Studio of Art is a haven surrounded by trees, plants, flower gardens, and its own pond. Her students enjoy nature and landscape painting on location, and classes are offered weekdays, evenings and Saturdays during the fall, winter and spring, and guest instructors offer their expertise in summer classes, as well. In addition to the landscapes surrounding the studio, field trips are taken to Pat’s beloved marshes, beaches, and lighthouses for students to broaden their abilities and take on new challenges in their work.

In a very real sense, Pat Witt has been the driving force behind the vision that has become the Art Renaissance in Millville, New Jersey, culminating in the “3rd Fridays” of the month on High Street when the art district stays open with live music throughout the street, inviting restaurants and gallery after gallery where people stroll and see art in all its forms available for purchase.

For more information regarding the Barn Studio of Art telephone 856-825-5028.

For Your Information...

The Wildwoods By-the-Sea

If you were expecting a boardwalk in either Avalon or Stone Harbor, you’ll have to continue on down the coast to the Wildwoods because that’s where you’ll find the next boardwalk, and this boardwalk is world-famous for many reasons.

Depending on your research, some say that the “Wildwoods-by-the-Sea” are made up of three different communities, and others say there are five. In order, they are Wildwood, North Wildwood, West Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and Diamond beach (part of Lower Township). For our purposes, the “Wildwoods” are built on a five-mile-long barrier island and home to a boardwalk that is over 2 ½ miles long and runs for 38 city blocks.

The Wildwood boardwalk was built at the turn of the last century, and its claim-to-fame is well founded because it has more rides than Disneyland, is bigger than Coney Island, and first-time visitors will discover no less than five amusement piers, including the world-renowned Morey’s Piers amusement complex and Raging Waters water park (owned and operated by Morey’s Piers),  arcade games, carousels,  world-class roller coasters, restaurants,  fudge from the kettle, funnel cakes, ice cream, saltwater taffy, a movie theater, souvenir shops, carnival games, the convention center and the Boardwalk Chapel.

In the summer trams run the boards from sunrise to sunset, and the old-fashioned trolley runs all year long.  Add to this the fabulous Doo-Wop architecture of the hotels, motels and other buildings, and you may be moved to take the Doo-Wop trolley tour to see all the sights. After all, you’re in the Doo-Wop Capital of the World, and you shouldn’t miss seeing why this area is a living tribute to the time when Rock and Roll was King, Dick Clark and American Bandstand were still in Philadelphia, and Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon and Fabian were at the height of their popularity! Obviously, you won’t miss the beach when you stroll the boardwalk because it’s an incredible beach, indeed. There’s fun, sun, and more at the Jersey shore in the “Wildwoods-by-the-Sea,” and the boardwalk is a huge part of the attraction that draws people from far and near. The year-round population of the area may be just 5,436 people (2000 census), but  there are far more visitors that come to have fun along this boardwalk – and there’s more than enough room for everyone with so many things to enjoy.

For more information call 609-729-9000, or go online to www.wildwoodsnj.com

13th Annual Boardwalk Classic Car Show

In our last issue we wrote about the fantastic Irish Festival in Wildwood, but there’s something else going on at the same time – September 21st through the 24th – and you don’t want to miss it! It’s the 13th Annual Boardwalk Classic Car Show on the boardwalk in Wildwood, and it’s centered in and around the Wildwood Convention Center.

If you love classic cars – dating from 1980 and going back in time – then this is the event you’ll want to attend. You’ll see custom cars, classic cars, muscle cars, street rods, antique cars, and corvettes on the boardwalk. Between 1500 and 2000 cars will be on display and competing for the prize as The Best in their respective categories.

Entry registration begins Thursday, September 21st, from 4:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the Imperial 500 Motor Inn, followed by a kick-off party beginning at 9:00 p.m. in the Wildwood Convention Center with entertainment and food.

Friday, September 22nd, registration will again be held at the Imperial from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and cars will be shown on the boardwalk from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with vendor displays next to the Convention Center parking lot.  Note: car club members – please register together so you can display together.

Saturday, September 23rd, entrants may register between 8:00 a.m. and noon, and the cars will be displayed on the boardwalk between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday night beginning at 9:00 p.m. there will be a dance concert in the Wildwoods Convention Center featuring “The Mudflaps.”

On Sunday, September 24th, church services will be held in the Wildwood Convention Center at 9:30 a.m. Show winners will have their cars on display on the apron in front of the Wildwood Convention Center on the boardwalk. For more information and details, call the event hotline at 609-523-8051, or go online to: www.njhra.com/cars.htm
