Edition 9, Volume 1
November 1, 2006
Today's Date:

Welcome to our Newsletter...

Where has this year gone? It’s November. Halloween has come and gone, the costumes have been put away for another year, the candy collection was huge, and Great Vacation newsletter is here with another issue. Thanksgiving is looming, turkeys are nervous, cranberries have been gathered, and folks are thinking in earnest about the holidays.

In this issue you’ll discover more Great Vacation things to do, places to stay, super restaurants, more from the art world, our featured businesses, the upcoming super entertainers who’ll be coming to Atlantic City, attractions, calendars of events and more.

We’re happy to report that you folks have been doing well in providing us with your feedback, as well as in contacting the folks in the businesses you see here. We extend a hearty “Thank You!” to those who have responded. As usual, we ask you to share this newsletter with your friends, and to check out our blog, as well.

You’ll find another feature on yet another boardwalk along the Jersey coast, and as we move towards Great Bird Day (Thanksgiving), now that the Great Pumpkin (Halloween – Thank you, Charlie Brown!) has come and gone, we’ll all begin to anticipate the many things to do as the year winds down and we begin to think about all the Great Vacation possibilities in 2007.

Come to think of it, it’s really not too early to book your Great Vacation at the Jersey shore for this coming year. If you haven’t done so already, you can do your research on our main website (www.GreatVacationGuide.com) and find out a lot about lodging, dining, and other things. If you’ve forgotten something you read in a past issue of our newsletter, just click on the word “newsletter” on our home page menu, and you’ll be able to see the things we’ve written about in previous issues.

If you have a suggestion about something you would like to see us write about, or if you know of something that should be promoted that’s coming up in our coverage area, please let us know about it. We really can’t be everywhere all at once, and you can help everyone out if you know about something worthy of attention. Thanks again to all who’ve contacted us, or who’ve patronized our sponsors! We appreciate your interest and your input.

                                                           Sincerely,

The East Lynne Company

"In a matter of weeks with the modern techniques for improving physiques
They have altered their beaks and they've lifted their cheeks
And now everyone speaks in society's cliques
Of the changes that science has wrought

Such is the lyrical prowess in "Cosmetic Surgery," one of the many songs written and performed by Manhattan cabaret performer and songwriter John Wallowitch.

On Thursday, November 9, the Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company, in its twenty-sixth year of producing American Stage Classics, is proud to bring John Wallowitch to Cape May to perform for the company’s annual Supper Club at Aleathea's Restaurant at The Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean Street. The evening begins at 5:30p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. At 6:30, enjoy a sumptuous buffet dinner, followed by performer John Wallowitch. Tickets are $50.00 and may be obtained by sending a check to East Lynne Theater Company, 121 Fourth Ave., West Cape May, NJ 08204. The Artist’s Corner

Phyllis London

When your family is made up of long established boat designers and builders, it would seem obvious that this fact would impact your life. Phyllis C. London’s paintings are indicative of that influence in her use of light, shadow, color and composition.

Her formal art training included studying with Mert Howe and well-known painter Zolton Szabo. Her images capture the power of nature, and her work has appeared in Atlantic City Magazine, Surfer Magazine, Hobie Hotline, as a staff illustrator for the Sands Hotel & Casino, and the for the  Trump organization.

Phyllis London’s work may be seen at the Accent Gallery, 956 Asbury Avenue, Ocean City, New Jersey, as well as at William Ris Gallery, 9400 Second Avenue, Stone Harbor, New Jersey.

Print copies of Phyllis London’s painting are made with a process known as Giclee Print. Giclee (ghee-clay) is French for “to spray,” and in the process individual colors are sprayed on the surface at a rate of millions of droplets per second. Because screens aren’t used,  her prints have a higher resolution thanlithographs.

To see a comprehensive selection of Phyllis London’s work go online to www.phyllislondon.com and click on “Paintings.” Discover an extraordinary range of themes and subjects by this marvelous artist.

For Your Information...

Point Pleasant Beach

Originally a seashore retreat for the Leni Lenape tribe of Native Americans, the area was discovered by Henry Hudson and his crew September 2, 1609 while they were on their way north to explore the Hudson River.

Settlers arrived in the 1700’s, and summer tourism began in the early 1800’s when Thomas Cook, Jr. opened his farm to guests.

In the 1870’s Captain John Arnold left the sea and bought land on the island, and he build a roadway to the ocean now named Arnold Avenue. He also constructed the first bridge over the Manasquan Inlet. The Borough of Point Pleasant Beach was established June 2, 1886, and the first boardwalk was built in 1890. In 1892 it was washed away by a storm, and the first permanent boardwalk was built in 1915 and eventually expanded to run the entire length of Point Pleasant Beach.

However, nature wasn’t done with it, and the hurricane of 1938 shortened the boardwalk to its present length. The town owns the boardwalk, but the beach is owned by various entities, and the largest slice is owned by the owners of Jenkinson’s Beach, who also operate the majority of the boardwalk businesses. That’s why it’s referred to as Jenkinson’s Beach.

Today, Point Pleasant Beach is a family-oriented community with children’s beach shows during the summer season on Monday nights, family games on Tuesday nights, and Radio Disney Concerts on Wednesday evenings. On Sunday night folks enjoy family movies on the beach.

Entertainment and dining facilities comprise about a third of the boardwalk’s length, which includes a food court, sushi bar and full-service restaurant in Jenkinson’s Pavilion.Visitors will also discover Jenkinson’s Aquarium, Jenk’s Nightclub, various arcades, miniature golf courses and an amusement park.

When the warm weather returns, you can get more information on Point Pleasant Beach by calling 732-892-0600, or going online to www.pointpleasantbeach.com

Cape May Jazz Festival

Jazz. The very word brings many names to one’s mind: Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Clark Terry, Herbie Mann, Chuck Mangione, Ella Fitzgerald, and so many, many phenomenally talented musicians both past and present. Jazz. It’s cool. It’s hot. It’s slow. It’s fast. It’s moody. It’s exciting. It’s so many, many things, and it’s always fantastic in Cape May!

Jazz is an original American art form, so much so that the U.S. Congress passed a resolution a decade ago making it official! If you love jazz, you don’t need a resolution to tell you why you should appreciate it. You just do, that’s all.

There are many great jazz festivals each year throughout America, but Historic Cape May, New Jersey is also unique because it hosts not one but two Jazz Festivals each year: in April and November.

In fact, it’s the 26th Cape May Jazz Festival Friday, November 10th through Sunday, November 12th, and this year New Orleans is coming to Cape May, with special concerts by the New Orleans All Star Jazz Band at Convention Hall at 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. Friday evening, November 10th.

Don’t miss the incredible line-up of jazz performers all three days at venues throughout Cape May.

For a complete schedule of who, when, and where log onto www.capemayjazz.org and click on “About the Festival” in the left hand column. You can also order tickets online.

If you prefer to call for information, phone 609-884-7277, or you can call toll-free for information and tickets to
1-877-726-5299. (click here)
